The Clinton Family YMCA’s AAA Minors (9-10 age group) baseball team qualified for the Dixie Youth state tournament by splitting games with Abbeville and Starr-Iva on Friday night.
Two District 3 teams, Starr-Iva and Clinton, advanced to the state tournament, which will be played in Moncks Corner.
Effectively, Clinton was in once it defeated Abbeville, 12-10. Starr-Iva won the district title with a 10-0 decision in the finals.
In a game marred by errors on both sides, Clinton used timely hitting to eliminate Abbeville. Garrett Satterfield and Zack Lawson shared the pitching.
Chris Boyd led Clinton with three hits in four at-bats. Satterfield scored three runs. Talan Campbell, Owen Glenn, Lawson and J.J. Dickson each had two hits in Clinton’s 13-hit attack.
The rainy weather that marred the entire tournament was again a factor.
“Untimely errors in the first three innings were our downfall,” coach Jayson Glenn said of the loss to Starr-Iva. “Our guys may have been a little fatigued after already playing an earlier game that included two weather delays, and Starr-Iva was fresh.”
Owen Glenn, who started on the mound, collected Clinton’s only hit.
“Our main goal was to reach the state tournament,” Jayson Glenn said, “and we did it by finishing runner-up.”
