The general difference in the football game at Bailey Memorial Stadium on Saturday – and it wasn’t much – was that Hampton, a first-time caller, could run the ball and Presbyterian could not.
The precise difference in the Pirates’ 24-23 victory was a missed extra point with 2:08 remaining.
Jordan Morgan scored from five yards out but Gardner Duckworth’s kick sailed wide left. The onsides kick failed, Hampton rushed for a first down, and that was that.
Led by senior quarterback John Walker, the Blue Hose (2-3) gained 251 yards through the air but only 64 on the ground. Hampton (3-3) rushed for 262 yards and passed for 105. Walker completed 22 of 32 passesfora career-high 251 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. He completed his first 14 passes.
DaShawn Davis and Keith Pearson each caught seven of Walker’s 22.
While the Blue Hose were passing it around, the Pirates were mostly handing it off.
Hampton’s Will Robinson rushed for 154 yards in 24 carries. Quarterback Delmon Williams gained 69 in 11 tries. Both were above PC’s team total.
PC got on the board first with a Duckworth 20-yard field goal on the opening series. The Pirates answered with an 11-play drive capped off by a 11-yard passing score (Williams to Byron Barney) to take a 7-3 lead late in the first.
The Blue Hose used the deep ball as Walker and Meyers hooked up on a 50-yard touchdown to give PC the lead again after the opening quarter.
Walker used the big play once again to hook up with Pearson for a 35-yard touchdown to give the Blue Hose a 17-7 lead that they carried at half.
Hampton came out in the third quarter and cut PC’s lead down to three, 17-14 on a one-yard rushing touchdown by Williams. The Pirates added an Evan Lomax field goal to make it 17-17 at the end of three.
In the fourth quarter, Hampton took a 24-17 advantage on an 11-yard rushing touchdown by Robinson.
The Blue Hose used an 18-play, season’s longest drive, capped off by a five-yard touchdown run from Morgan.
But the extra point failed.
Freshman Jarrett Nagy matched his career-high with 12 tackles for the Blue Hose, while red-shirt senior Robert Baker tied his career-high with 10 tackles. Sophomore Rod Haygood recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.
