SPARTANBURG – Two one-run games a doubleheader sweep did make for the Presbyterian College baseball team, which finished a Big South series sweep with wins of 5-4 and 4-3 at USC Upstate on Saturday.

The Blue Hose have won seven in a row. On a side note, it’s four in a row in Spartanburg, where they also defeated Wofford earlier in the week. Presbyterian has evened its record at 18-18 and sprang to 10-5 in the conference, where the winning streak is six.

Ashby Smith paced the Blue Hose offense on Saturday with a pair of multi-hit games which included his second home run of the season in game one.

Johnny Cook and Michael Varga had multiple hits in game one, while Nick Guimbarda and Jimmy Marcelli each had a pair of hits in the nightcap.

Grayson Stoneking (2-1) outpitched USCU’s Ben Ferrer in the former and Jackson Dean (3-3) prevailed over Will Wheeler (2-1) in the latter.

Austin Paradis had quite the save in game two, entering with the bases loaded and none away in the eighth and getting out of the jam unscathed. He then returned to pitch a scoreless ninth.

Marcelli hit his second homer of the season in game two, and it turned out to be the game-winner.
