Clinton High School’s cross country teams ran up against tough competition on Saturday at the GTC Classic, hosted by Greenville Track Club and held at Southside High School.

The Red Devils finished 14th out of 22 teams in the boys’ competition and 20th out of 22 in girls. Laurens was 21st in the boys’ race.

GTC sponsors the Reedy River 10K and a number of other events in Greenville County, the high school meet draws most of the top Upstate programs from all classifications. Many schools participated because the Class 3A and 4A Upstate meets are to be held on the Southside course in November.

Wade Hampton won the boys’ race over, in order, Southside, Pendleton, Riverside and Mauldin. Clinton finished highest of teams in Region 3-3A, followed by Woodruff in 17th place and Emerald in 19th.

Six Clinton runners finished in the top 100 out of the 246 runners: (75.) Nick Perkins 20:36, (84.) David Wilkie 20:46, (89.) Zac Bagwell 20:52, (94.) William Reid 21:02, (96.) James Anderson 21:04, and (100.) Jacob Hawkins 21:08.

The boys’ junior varsity placed eighth out of 20 teams, also with six in the top 100: (25.) Javi Carles 22:22, (73.) Gray Walsh 24:14, (78.) Campbell Atkinson 24:27, (79.) Hayden Stinson 24:30, (95.) Ja’Kobe Watson 25:15, and (97.) Sam Gearhart 25:22.

Riverside won the girls’ competition over, in order, Mauldin, Wade Hampton, Pendleton and Palmetto. Woodruff (13th) and Emerald (15th) finished ahead of Clinton from Region 3.

The highest finishing Red Devils were Dorothy Trent (23:42) in 47th place and Elizabeth Reid (25:16) in 84th.
