UNION – The top of the Clinton batting order – catcher Jy Leake, shortstop Bryce Young and second baseman Zane McLendon – combined for nine hits, three apiece, and the Dixie Youth O-Zone (11-12 age group) All-Stars turned the tables on North Myrtle Beach with 12-2 victory at Timken Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.
The trio also drove in four runs, two by McLendon, as Clinton defeated the team that won by an 11-0 score in the State Tournament opener between the two clubs on Saturday.
Caleb Taylor, the winning pitcher, and Young homered for Clinton, which spotted North Myrtle Beach a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Taylor pitched four innings, allowing only a hit and an unearned run, before yielding to McLendon for the final two. Taylor fanned six, while McLendon put up four strikeouts.
Four other Clinton batters hit safely – two each by Taylor and Carson Glenn – in a 15-hit attack.
Clinton scored two runs in the second inning, five in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Luke Roupe collected both North Myrtle Beach hits.
Seneca and Hartsville played afterwards. A Hartsville victory would put Clinton in a position of having to win two games for the state championship. A Seneca victory would result in a corn flip between it and Clinton to determine which would draw a bye.
Assuming Hartsville won -- it was leading 12-0 in the fourth inning -- Clinton will play that team at 10 on Wednesday morning.
