COLUMBIA – Clinton finished eighth in Class 3A at the S.C. High School League’s state track meet at Spring Valley High School on Saturday, and for the second year in row, the Red Devils won an event.
Junior Keira Dendy put the shot 37 feet, 11-1/2 inches to win the gold medal over Lake Marion’s Naceema McMath, whose best was 37-0.
The 4x100-meter relay team, best in the state the year before, this time had to settle for second as the team of Patients Adams, Maya Smith, Aaliyah Johnston and Quiana Suber ran second to Manning. The Monarchs’ margin of victory was .49 of a second, 49.38 to 49.87.
In the team competition, Bishop England took first place with 73 points, followed by May River with 58, Waccamaw and Camden each with 46, Hanahan 42, Pendleton 39, Seneca 34, Clinton and West Oak 33, Manning 30 and Woodruff 30.
Maya Smith finished fifth in both the 100 and 200 meters, completing the former in 12.68 seconds and the latter in 26.18. Deasia Boyd was seventh in the 800 meters (2:36.37) and Mia Smith was seventh in the 400 hurdles at 1:11.10.
