Led by second baseman Bryce Young – who doubled three times, had four hits, drove in four runs and scored four times – Clinton advanced in the Dixie Youth O-Zone (11-12 age group) State Tournament with a 22-4 victory over Lancaster on Monday night at Timken Athletic Park in Union.
Four other Clinton players – Zane McLendon, Caleb Taylor, Rylan Bagwell and Kason Copeland – rapped two hits apiece in a 16-hit attack.
Clinton will face North Myrtle Beach, which lost to Hartsville, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
Scoring six runs in the first inning, seven in the second, two in the third and seven in the fourth, Clinton piled up 16 hits and took advantage of eight Lancaster errors. Jase Fair had two of Lancaster’s four hits.
Clinton divided the pitching among starter McLendon, Copeland and Lee Malone. McLendon gave up one earned run in 2-1/3 innings, allowing two hits, walking four and striking out four.
Four shared the mound duties for Lancaster. Only six of Clinton’s 22 runs were earned off Ayden Kennington, Tanner Sellers, J.T. Gandy and Chandler Edwards. The Lander hurlers hit four Clinton batters and walked five others.
Clinton also stole five bases, led by Jayden Glenn with two.
North Myrtle Beach blanked Clinton 11-0 on Saturday, but Clinton managed to stay alive with an 11-0 victory over Greenwood on Sunday and the victory over Lancaster.
