The Chief Magistrate of Laurens County, Leesa Wheless Inabinet, died on Friday at Laurens County Memorial Hospital after she suffered a medical issue while driving.

Judge Inabinet was driving on U.S. 221 near Chestnut Street Extension at 1:30 p.m. when she apparently experienced some type of medical emergency. She then pulled off the side of the road and lost consciousness. Her foot then slipped off the brake and her car rolled into a ditch. The car was undamaged and no other vehicles were involved.

She was taken to the Prisma Health-run facility, where she died. Investigations by the Laurens Police and the Laurens County Coroner’s Office remain in progress.

Judge Inabinet, 61, was the Eighth Judicial Circuit’s representative on the S.C. Summary Court Judges Association board. She was named Chief Magistrate in February 2016.
