Laurens District High’s Duane Martin, a Louisville commitment, is one of seven finalists for the state’s Mr. Football award. Academic performance, leadership and community involvement are all factors in the selection.
Though hampered by injuries, Martin has played a major role in the Raiders’ 4-1 start.
On offense, Martin has averaged 6.7 yards per rush, totaling 193 yards and three touchdowns. At linebacker, the 6-2, 250 senior has made 29 tackles, three for loss, with two pass break-ups and a sack.
The other six finalists are Luke Doty (Myrtle Beach), Jalin Hyatt (Dutch Fork), Noah Bell (Chapman), Mikele Colasurdo (Saluda), Rahjai Harris (Byrnes) and Tayler Venables (Daniel).
The winner will be announced at the Touchstone Energy North-South Game on Dec. 14 in Myrtle Beach.
Laurens completed a sweep of its volleyball rivalry with Clinton, defeating the Red Devils 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 on Wednesday.
Mackenzie Ward led the Raiders with 17 kills, while Kayla Moore had 17 digs. Aubrey Wardell scored two aces and had eight digs. Kamryn George had three kills.
The Raiders also won the junior varsity match, defeating Clinton 25-17, 25-23. Micah Robertson had four kills. Sara Wolgamott had four aces.
Belton-Honea Path brought an end to Clinton’s seven-match winning streak by defeating the Red Devils, 4-2, on Wednesday.

Doubles: Ellison Prewitt-Joycelyn Hall defeated Kaitey Threatt-Grace Johnson 7-5, 7-5.
The Red Devils are 8-2, still 7-0 in Region 3-3A, entering Thursday’s match at Newberry (Oakland Park).
