In the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s Region 1-5A game, Wade Hampton relief pitcher Calloway Cooper hit Laurens’ Nick Robertson with a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing the Raiders to defeat the Generals, 4-3.
Zak Rice, who had singled to lead off the second extra frame, scored the winning run.
First baseman Jaylon Nance put LDHS ahead with a third-inning double, scoring Aiden Pridgen, and scored on Rice’s single.
The Generals tied the score with two runs in the fifth. Both teams scored single runs in the eighth, extending the game. Robertson scored on a wild pitch after a lead-off walk.
Robertson pitched eight inning, allowing four hits and three runs, striking out 10, but it was Jalen Bragg, who retired Wade Hampton in order in the ninth, who got the decision. Cooper took the loss after starter Drew Hayes pitched the first seven innings, allowing two runs.
Rice was the only Laurens batter with two hits.
Wade Hampton’s starting pitcher, Hayes, collected two hits and an RBI.
Belton-Honea Path scored four runs in the second inning and five in the third, defeating Clinton 9-1.
The Bears outhit the Red Devils, 12-2, with the Clinton hits – singles by Griffin Fuller and Blake Smith – occurring back-to-back in the second inning.
Shortstop Joseph LeCroy led B-HP with three singles and two runs at the top of the order.
Starter Caleb Riddle took the loss for Clinton. Riddle also scored the lone Red Devil run after walking to lead off the sixth.
Laurens opened softball season with an 11-2 win at Wade Hampton. It was the debut of Raider softball coach Michaela Smith.
LDHS broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning. Laurens had only six hits but took advantage of nine walks and five errors by the Generals.
Cassie Plaia collected three of the hits. Rachel Delio pitched a complete game, allowing two hits, striking out eight and walking two.
Wade Hampton blanked the Laurens boys’ tennis team 7-0 on Tuesday night.

Clinton’s scheduled Wednesday tennis road trip to Blue Ridge has been postponed and will be made up later.
