CAMDEN – The spring was quite the unique and successful showcase for golf at Clinton High School.

The Red Devils pulled off their first invitation as a team to the Class 3A postseason by virtue of a third place in Region 3-3A and played their way into the state tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Camden Country Club.

Not only did Clinton wind up 11th in the state, but Phoebe Carles wound up all-state by finishing in a tie for 10th individually.

And, by the way, the Red Devils field only one golf team. The top two – and three of the top four – performers were girls, and the top four were Carleses.

Phoebe shot 153 (75-78). Sofia shot 171 (85-86). Javi shot 185 (94-91). Zoe shot 187 (89-98). Matthew McKittrick shot 211 (104-107) on the par-70, 6,008-yard layout.

As a team, Clinton shot 694 (343-351) to place 11th out of 16 teams.

Bishop England easily won the state title, shooting 612 to defeat Chesnee by 15 strokes.

The individual winner was Camden’s Willis Kelly, who shot 3-under 67 in the final round after an opening 74. Overall, that left him 1-over for the tournament.
