It’s about eight months until the softball seasons begin at Laurens District and Clinton high schools, but that doesn’t mean the two teams aren’t holding summer workouts.

Since they are undoubtedly a bit weary of playing among themselves, the two teams played an exhibition on the Red Devils’ home field on Thursday.

They weren’t in midseason form, but they showed midseason effort, and a couple or three dozen fans of both schools wandered over to watch.

The teams were decked out in school colors, a full contingent of umpires growled “safe” and “out,” “stee-rike” and “ball,” and it might as well have been March other than the warmth in the late-afternoon air.
