Led by Eric Newton, Clinton’s boys’ cross country team won the so-called “pre-region meet” in Region 3-3A, installing the Red Devils as a favorite when they host the official meet on Tuesday afternoon at 5.

Newton captured the individual title with a time of 17:42.

Zac Bagwell finished fourth at 18:49, Nick Perkins seventh at 19:17, Billy Hogarth eighth at 19:18, David Wilkie 12th at 19:31, Keenan Dominick 14th at 19:51 and Brandon Campbell 25th at 20:56.

Clinton total 28 points.

The girls finished third with 62 points, led by Paige Trent at 23:28.

Dorothy Trent was 10th at 23:59, Jakota Wall 17th at 25:42, Maren Vondergeest 18th at 26:09 and Zoey Carles 25th at 20:56.

Girls’ tennis rolled past Emerald 7-0 on the road Tuesday, raising its record to 7-4.

In singles, Mary Catherine Dailey defeated Elisabeth Tucker 6-0, 6-1. Gerri Hill defeated Abby Johnson 6-0, 6-1. Gracie Spangler defeated Lauren Young 6-1, 6-1. Kaitey Threatt defeated Kierdyn Davis 6-1, 6-2. Reese Gowan defeated Rachel Peeler 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Dailey-Hill defeated Tucker-Johnson 6-1, 6-2. Mary Grace Johnson-Gracie Wiggins defeated Grace Hall-Mary Grace Morrow 6-1, 6-3.

In varsity volleyball, Broome defeated Clinton 25-20, 25-13, 25-21.

Newberry slipped past the Red Devils 25-17, 21-25, 25-12, 25-21.

Clinton defeated Ware Shoals 25-18, 25-23, 26-24.

Emerald defeated Clinton 25-15, 25-23, 25-13.

In junior varsity volleyball, Broome defeated Clinton 25-10, 25-17. Emerald won 22-25, 26-24, 15-11.

Clinton Middle School defeated Gray Court-Owings 25-10, 25-18, 25-18.

The Clinton junior varsity football game scheduled for Thursday has been rescheduled for Monday. Newberry will visit Wilder Stadium for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
