In its first varsity season, Clinton girls’ soccer is headed for the Class 3A playoffs, but on on Tuesday night the Red Devils went up against the cream of the Region 3 crop.

Though the Wolverines won, 6-3, Clinton coach Joe Benson thought it was his team’s best effort of the year. Woodruff advance to the upper-state finals a year ago.

The game could’ve ended in a 3-3 tie if not for two penalty kicks by Woodruff and an own goal by Clinton,” Benson said. “I couldn’t be prouder of our growth as a team and these young women’s execution of the game.”

Madison Bagwell scored two goals in the first half and Abby Collins scored one in the second. Woodruff scored three goals in each half.

Woodruff shut out Clinton, 6-0, in an earlier meeting between the two on March 26.

Clinton is 9-6-1 overall, 5-3 in region play. Woodruff is 13-3 and 8-0.

The junior varsity game was much the same, with M.C. Dailey’s first-half goal giving the Red Devils an early lead. Two second-half goals gave Woodruff a 2-1 victory.

Led by Anders Orr and Brandon Campbell, who won their matches without losing a single game, Clinton won its seventh consecutive Region 3-3A tennis match over Woodruff, 5-1, on Tuesday.

The Red Devils are 9-1 overall entering Wednesday’s match at Christ Church, which handed Clinton its only defeat last week.
