J.R. Reid will be Principal of Sanders Middle School for the 2019-2020 school year.
He will be replacing Dr. LaCresha Byrd, who has taken a district office position in Union County beginning July 1. Reid will be returning to SMS, where he previously taught PE and served as the school’s athletic director, following two years of service as an assistant principal at Laurens Middle School.
Reid said, “I am very grateful to the school board and district leadership for placing their trust in me and allowing me to continue to serve this community. I began my career at Sanders Middle School in 2013, and I am very excited to be rejoining the family.”
Anna Brink, Principal at LMS, said, "Mr. Reid has been an integral part of the LMS community, and he will be missed. I am excited that he will be able to share his passion as an educator with Sanders Middle, and I have great confidence in his leadership. I look forward to working with him and the other principals to make our district the best it can be.”
Dr. Stephen Peters, Superintendent, added, “We are excited to see administrative candidates from our Aspiring Administrator Academy cohort get opportunities to lead our schools. They have been carefully prepared and trained, and we have full confidence in their abilities to step in and up to meet the challenges of leadership.”
Peters also had kind words for the departing principal, saying, “We thank Dr. Byrd for her years of service to SMS and wish her the best as she assumes the role of Director of Instruction in the Union County School District.”
Reid served in the United States Army from 1999 to 2005 and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant based on his performance and his leadership skills. After leaving the army, Reid earned his degree in physical education from Lander University and went on to complete a master's degree in administration and supervision from Anderson University. Reid is currently working toward his doctorate in educational leadership from Clemson University.
