Stellartean Jones made the step up from Town Council to Mayor of Gray Court on Tuesday, easily defeating Scott Cook in runoff that drew quite the turnout.

Cook led the vote in the March 5 municipal election, a three-way affair that ousted the town’s 28-year incumbent, John Carter.

This time, though, with 44.81 percent of the town’s registered voters participating, Jones won almost exactly 60 percent (59.72) of the 216 votes cast. Jones received 126 votes to Cook’s 85 votes, or 40.28 percent.

The bout was a quick decision. The Laurens County Board of Voter Registration and Elections had only two precincts and absentee ballots to review. The unofficial results were out less than an hour after the polls closed at 7 p.m.
