Special Olympics USA

Whitten Center is excited to announce that three residents, along with staff teammates, were selected to compete in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games held in Seattle, Washington.

The games run July 1-6. The trip is sponsored and paid for by Special Olympics Area 5 fundraising, Whitten Center Parents’ Club, and the Whitten Center Foundation.

This is an amazing experience for our residents,” said Shelby Thomas, Recreation Department Manager at Whitten Center as well as the Special Olympics Area 5 Director. “This opportunity gives our residents a chance to do the same things you and I love to do: travel, shop, compete, see old friends and make new ones. They deserve that, and we are thankful for supportive groups like the Parents’ Club and Foundation that help make that happen.”

Donnie Price will compete alongside staff member Valerie Rice in the Unified Bocce events. Jason Hames will compete alongside staff member Tawanna Rice, also in the Unified Bocce events. Kathy Gilmore will compete in the Unified Bowling events with staff member Ann Grady. Shelby Thomas is participating in the USA Games as a Bocce Coach.

Whitten Center staff and residents participate in Special Olympics practices, challenges, and games throughout the year. Volunteers are always welcome to get involved with these events.
