For Laurens Little League’s 11-under all-star baseball team, it’s been a long wait. James Pinson is head coach of a team without a district.

The good news is that the Laurens Recreation representative finally gets its chance in this week’s state championship tournament in Taylors at Northwood Little League. The bad news is that the team has played only scrimmages in preparation for the state finals.

Laurens opens play on Friday at 6 p.m. against the winner of a game between Union County and Irmo on Thursday night. Nine of Laurens’ 13 players have past experience in the state tournament.

A Friday victory would give Laurens a day off on Saturday and only a single game on Sunday.

A state championship would put Laurens in the Tournament of Champions, beginning July 26 in Greenville, N.C. The state tournament continues until at least Tuesday, July 16.

Team members are Sam Adams, Cal Benson, Jaylin Bluford, Braydon Burke, Tristan Buzbee, Logan Gault, Logan Martin, Brayden Patterson, Wyatt Pinson, Sam Robertson, Jaquavion Watson, Auston Williams and Luke Young.
