Clinton High School qualified for the Class 3A track and field championships, scheduled in all classes for Friday and Saturday at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, in six events.
All of the school’s qualifiers are from the girls’ team, which placed five individuals and one relay team in the state championships by virtue of top-four finishes at the Upper State 3A Meet last weekend at Broome High School in Spartanburg.
The boys’ team competed in eight events in the Upper State Meet but did not place any in the state finals.
Leading the Lady Red Devils were a pair of Smiths, one named Maya and the other Mia.
Maya Smith finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.74 seconds. Mia Smith finished fourth in the 100 hurdles at 17.48 seconds.
Quiana Suber took third in the 400 meters at 1:01.14. DeAsia Boyd qualified by finishing second in the 800 meters at 2:27.03. Keria Dendy took second in the shot with a heave of 35-9. The 4x100 relay team finished second at 49.95 seconds.
Others competing for the Clinton girls were Aaliyah Johnston, fifth in the 100 (12.88), and Quiana Suber, eighth (13.04); Johnston, sixth in the 200 (26.34); Maya Smith, seventh (26.43); and Suber, ninth (27.51); Tu’Nidra Richey, 14th in the 400 (1:07.57); Paige Trent, eighth in the 1,600 (5:53.71) and sixth in the 3,200 (13:00.91); Dorothy Trent, ninth in the 3,200 (13:19.79); Devionna Walker, eighth in the 100 hurdles (18.13); Mia Smith, fifth in the 400 hurdles (1:12.67); and Dendy seventh in the discus (85-1.5).
The 4x400 relay team finished seventh at 4:37.32 and the 4x800 team was 12th at 11:25.70.
The best boys’ showing at the Upper State Meet was the 4x400 relay team, which finished fifth at 3:32.70. The 4x800 team was seventh at 9:05.28.
Eric Newton finished sixth in the 3,200 meters (10:51.57) and eighth in the 1,600 (5:00.71). P.J. Bluford took seventh in the long jump (20-2) and ninth in the high jump (5-8). Jishon Payne was eighth in the discus (119-6), and Greg Sanders was 10th in the shot (39-10).
