Laurens Majors

Laurens Recreation has one more all-star baseball team competing for a Little League state championship.

The L3 Majors (11-12 age group), whose head coach is Luke Tollison, drew a first-round bye and begin play on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Summerville. The District 1 champions will face either PALS (Florence, District 5 champ) or Tega Cay-Fort Mill (District 6).

A win would give L3 another day off, resuming play on Monday, and by remaining in the winners’ bracket, the Laurens team would advance to the championship game on Wednesday, July 24, needing to win only once in two potential games.

All of that, of course, is getting wildly ahead of the simple need to open the tournament with a victory.

Should Laurens win the state championship, the Southeast Regional will be contested in Warner Robins, Ga., on Aug. 2-7.
