Laurens District High School’s Cassie Plaia was selected as a 2018 S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Class 5A All-State softball player.
Plaia, the junior shortstop for LDHS, is among the top 24 softball players in 5A in South Carolina. Plaia earned the honor by being a significant contributor for the Raiders team both offensively and defensively this season.
Head Softball Coach Michaela Smith said, “I was very pleased but not necessarily surprised by the numerous awards Cassie Plaia received this year. Cassie works hard on and off the field and she has been dedicated to this program. While this is my first year coaching her, she has been a player I have seen grow and develop since she was in the seventh grade. She took well to my coaching and was a crucial leader on the field with the team. Cassie excels on the field and in the classroom, as well, and that is what we want for our student-athletes. I am very proud of her and happy to see her hard work pay off.”
When asked how she felt after being notified of the award, Plaia said, “It’s crazy to think about what an impression or impact softball has made on my life. It’s been so much more than wins and awards to me. It has given me family, friends, and has shown me what true dedication can provide for me in my life.”
The SCCAWS will recognize Plaia and head softball coach Michaela Smith at an awards ceremony at the University of South Carolina-Aiken on Wednesday, June 19.
