COLUMBIA – Evan Prince capped off a terrific second season as a member of the Laurens Raider track and field team with a second-place finish in the 3,200 meters at the state meet in Class 5A on Saturday.
Prince finished in a time of 9 minutes, 47.43 seconds. Evan earned the right to compete at the state meet after a third place finish in his heat and fifth overall at the 5A Qualifier on May 7, also at Spring Valley High School. The qualifier had been postponed from its scheduled date of May 5.
Evan had a great season, winning several 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. He won the Region 1-5A title in the 3,200. Evan was also a member of the 4×800 relay team this season.
In the qualifier, several athletes set personal best marks throughout the competition. Rodarius Yeargin, Mark McGowan, T.J. Garlington and Braden Smith all set new marks in their respective events. The 4×100 relay team (Chase Gambrell, Travon Grant, Zacariah Miller, and Tye Roberson) and 4×400 team (Deidre Smith, Malikai Walker, Ernesto Ramirez, Isaac Craig) set a season-best time.
The Raiders finished 24th in the 5A team standings with Prince’s eight points.
