Newberry converted a 2-point conversion pass with 37 seconds left to play to win 14-13 on Clinton’s Senior Night.
After an interception, Newberry drove 95 yards in under 2 and ½ minutes to score the touchdown that cut Clinton’s lead to 13-12. Senior running back Ahmorae Wilmore (93 yards, 2 TDs) scored the touchdown, and sophomore wide receiver Zach Chalmers caught the 2-point conversion pass for the final score, and the 1-point Newberry win.
The Bulldogs won this rivalry game 49-12 in 2018 and 49-21 in 2017. The last time Clinton won was 2012, 37-20. This was the rivalry’s lowest scoring game since 2003.
Newberry senior quarterback Zay Chalmers – 16 of 24 passing, 198 yards – led the Bulldogs’ game-winning drive. Sophomore running back KJ Robinson caught a big pass to set up Newberry’s winning scores.
Kimon Quarles had a big game for Clinton – 93 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving. Quarles connected with sophomore quarterback Davis Wilson for the tie-breaking TD pass to start the 4th quarter, and a 13-6 Red Devil lead. Clinton lost the ball on fumbles twice early in the game; Newberry had a field goal attempt blocked in the 3rd quarter.
It was a defensive gem for the Red Devils, despite the scoreboard. Newberry was 0 for 8 on 3rd down conversion attempts (2 for 3 on 4th down attempts).
Newberry earned 309 yards on offense. Clinton amassed 303 yards on offense.
Newberry is 5-3 on the season, 2-1 in region play. The Bulldogs play at Union County this Friday and will play cross-county rival Mid-Carolina Nov. 1.
Clinton is 3-5 on the season, 1-2 in region play. The Red Devils have their last two games on the road – this Friday at Emerald, Nov. 1 at Woodruff.
