SPARTANBURG – Dual basketball games in season-opening duels with Oakbrook Prep did not go well for Laurens Academy on Friday night.

The Knights defeated the LA girls, 58-24, and the Crusader boys, 85-40.

Daja Taylor led Oakbrook with 14 points, and Faith Sides and Abbie Bishop each added 13. For LA (0-1), Blair Quarles scored 12 points, going 5-for-12 from the field, to lead the way. Olivia Huck added eight points, and Reagan Williamson and Paxton Green each scored two.

The third quarter wasn’t kind to the Crusaders as Oakbrook outscored them, 19-2.

The fourth quarter buried the boys’ team as the Knights, who led, 36-27, at halftime, outscored the Crusaders, 23-2.

Junior Caio Rita led LA with 14 points, and Diamonte Grant added nine. Luke Kerber scored seven, Thomas Lowry five, Cal Robertson three and Clarence Bertoli two.

Laurens Academy hit only 16 of 49 field-goal tries.

Rita also led the Crusaders with 10 rebounds and four assists.

LA committed 26 turnovers.
