Presbyterian College is giving Will Pontoon a chance to be a Division I wrestler.
Pontoon finished fifth in Class 5A in the 220-pound class for Laurens. Now we will begin wrestling at PC as the Clinton school begins its wrestling program.
According to LDHS coach Rob Sheffield, Pontoon will become the first product of the program to wrestle at the NCAA’s top level.
“PC is starting its program, and Will is getting in on the ground floor,” Sheffield said.
He also drew offers from Limestone and Newberry.
“What drew me to PC was the coaches’ background,” Pontoon said. “[Tony DeAnda and staff] are widely respected, and if I wanted to do the most with my ability, and get the most of my education, that’s what drew me to PC.”
Pontoon excelled in wrestling and football for the Raiders. His football career may not be over. He has decided to concentrate on wrestling and get acclimated to the college lifestyle as a freshman but said he may join the Blue Hose football program as a sophomore.
