Clinton High School did come away from the High School League’s state championship weekend with a title.
The Lady Red Devil 4x100-meter relay team won the Class 3A gold medal, and four other individuals placed in the track and field championships at Spring Valley High School.
For Clinton, Quiana Suber took third in the 400 meters, Kiera Dendy fourth in the shot put, Maya Smith fifth in the 100 meters and De’Asia Boyd seventh in the 800 meters.
The boys’ tennis team met with disappointment in the Saturday championship match against Bishop England (16-0), falling shy in the state finals at Cayce Tennis Center for the second consecutive year. Clinton (13-4) fell, 6-0, to the Bishops. Hanahan thwarted the Red Devil bid a year earlier.
No. 2 singles player Ike Waldron came closest to a breakthrough, falling to Bishop England’s Lleyton Dacub 6-4, 6-4. The Red Devils all won games, but not sets, in every match.
