It’s been a good week for football in Laurens County School District 55. The varsity Raiders’ 35-10 victory over Wade Hampton on Thursday was the icing on the cake.


While the Laurens District High School varsity was winning its second game of the season, Sanders Middle School was wrapping up a 24-8 football victory over Merriwether on Thursday.

The Yellow Jackets scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters and yielded a score to Merriwether in the fourth.

Tykevious Kennedy scored on a 45-yard run. Gemire Darden scored from 20 yards out. Tyquavis Johnson rumbled in from 13.

On defense, Darden had two sacks and a forced fumble. Rockeli Cunningham made two sacks. Kennedy made nine solo tackles, one of them a sack.

Coach Ernest Barksdale said, “I’m so proud of the game the guys played. It was a team effort, and they showed they are getting better.”


Led by Jay Pulley, Devon Redd and James Rawl, Laurens Middle School defeated Saluda 34-1.

We payed a great game as a team,” Coach Corey Graydon said. “I’m very proud of our guys. We definitely have room to improve to get where we want to be, but we are 2-0 and that was our goal.”


On Wednesday, the LDHS junior varsity edged Wade Hampton 7-6.

The Raiders scored on their first possession after a Keshard Davis interception. Jeremiah Fuller scored on a one-yard run, and Brian Sheffield’s PAT proved to be the difference in the game as the Generals scored late in the half but failed on a two-point converson.

According to coach Jawon Stephens, Nick Cook excelled on both sides of the ball, blocking well, catching a pass and making several key tackles. He also praised Nick Humphries’ quarterback play for Laurens (2-1).


Hanna blanked the LDHS girls’ tennis team 7-0 on Thursday.

The Raiders lost to an excellent team,” coach Susan Youmans said.

In singles, the Yellow Jackets’ Addie Anderson defeated Anna Jenkins 6-0, 6-0. Ashlen Chapman defeated Abby Davis 6-0, 6-0. Jillian Spencer defeated McKenzie Little 6-0, 6-0. Lawson Dorsey defeated Bella Youssef 6-0, 6-2. Ally Jones defeated Becky Brownless 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles, Hanna’s Anderson-Chapman defeated Jenkins-Jenkins 8-4 (pro set). Maren Clare McClain-Adrika Velan defeated Kelsi Little-Skylar Douglass 6-0, 6-1.


Laurens volleyball lost to Easley (25-13, 25-22) and Hanna (25-10, 25-7) in a tri-match hosted by the Green Wave.

The Raiders junior varsity fell in two sets to Hanna and Easley.
