Clinton’s Peyton Spangler and his fellow Newberry College baseball seniors went out historically.
The Wolves hosted an NCAA Division II regional and finished with a 41-16 record that included the school’s first South Atlantic Conference championship and a 13-game win streak.
Newberry was eliminated from the postseason by losses of 5-1 to Young Harris (Ga.) and 7-0 to Catawba, in spite of Spangler going 2-for-5 in the two games while playing third base.
Another former Red Devil, righthanded pitcher Aaron Copeland of Mountville, had a 1-0 record, with a 6.91 earned run average, in his freshman year with the Wolves. Also a shortstop at Clinton High, Copeland batted six times at Newberry and had three hits.
