NEWBERRY – Ruthie Moore led Laurens Academy’s girls with 28 points in a 43-15 victory over Newberry Academy on Friday night. The Eagles won the boys’ game over LA by a score of 35-31.

Moore hit 11 of her 28 field-goal attempts. Two were three-pointers, and she hit four of six free throws.

Jennifer Wu added six points, Morgan Marlett 4, Emily Abercrombie and Blair Quarles two each and Florence Mitchell one. The Crusaders led 11-0 after a quarter and 26-4 at half.

Daja Taylor and Kathryn Wilbanks led Newberry with four apiece.

Laurens Academy (13-3) hit only 16 out of 52 field-goal tries and nine of 14 free throws. The Eagles were 6-for-36 from the field and 3-for-7 from the line.

Led by Noah Moore with 11 points, the LA boys led by seven points after three quarters but were outscored 14-3 in the final period, hitting just one of 10 shots.

Dawson Foster scored nine, Charlton McCall six, Thomas Lowry three and Luke Kerber two.

William Buford scored 14 points to lead the Eagles, followed by Bennett Conley and Andy Lia with 10 each.

The Laurens Academy boys (9-7) connected on 13 out of 39 field-goal attempts and two of three free throws. In the crucial fourth quarter, Newberry Academy was 5-for-9 from the floor and 1-for-4 from the line. Though the Eagles hit only six of 14 free-throw attampts, LA only tried three free throws, hitting two. Foster fouled out.

The LA junior varsity girls defeated Newberry Academy 22-9 behind 14 points from Olivia Huck.
